Local Government Structure

Local government in Wootton St Lawrence operates under a three tier system - Parish Council, Borough Council and County Council.  We also have a Member of Parliament (Kit Malthouse), who represents us in Parliament.

Parish Council for Wootton St Lawrence and Ramsdell

The Parish Council for Wootton St Lawrence and Ramsdell meets regularly to discuss issues relating to the Parish, including:

  • Finance

  • Planning

  • Highways

  • Broadband

  • Playgrounds

  • Local policing

  • The Manydown development

  • The Neighbourhood Plan

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is responsible for:

  • Housing

  • Leisure and recreation

  • Environmental health

  • Waste collection

  • Planning applications

  • Local taxation collections.

Hampshire County Council is responsible for:

  • Adults’ Health and Care 

  • Children’s Services 

  • Corporate Services

Member of Parliament

MPs’ duties in Parliament include:

  • participating in debates and voting on legislation and other matters.

  • They may also be members of committees examining new laws or the work of government departments.

  • Some have a role as a minister in government or a spokesperson in opposition.

  • MPs can help their constituents by advising on problems (particularly those that arise from the work of government departments), representing the concerns of their constituents in Parliament and acting as a figurehead for the local area.

  • MPs usually support their party by voting with its leadership in the House of Commons and acting as a representative for the party in their constituency.
